His portfolio includes translation and interpreting work for academia\, law firms\, and private clients. Additionally\, he has contributed to the profession by serving on ATA鈥檚 Professional Development Committee and ATA鈥檚 Law Division Leadership Council. \nBen Karl\, MBA\, CT is an ATA-certified French into English translator specializing in corporate and marketing communications and user experience from French and Mandarin into English. He serves as ATA director\, chair of ATA鈥檚 Advocacy Committee\, and is a member of ATA鈥檚 Membership Committee and The ATA Chronicle Editorial Advisory Board. He is also chair of the International Federation of Translators鈥� (FIT) Translatio Standing Committee and edits 脌 Propos\, the blog of ATA鈥檚 French Language Division. SUMMARY:Developing Expertise in Interpreting: Reflection\, Feedback\, and Repetition
DESCRIPTION:Explore strategies for constructive feedback and deliberate practice in this interactive webinar\, focusing on refining interpreting skills through guided reflection\, repetition\, and collaboration.\nInterpreting expertise cannot be achieved by simply working as an interpreter for a long time. Deliberate practice is needed to attain expertise\, and two of the cornerstones of deliberate practice are constructive feedback and repetition. This webinar will help you develop tools to increase the value of the feedback you give to yourself and colleagues. You will be given a rubric to use when giving yourself or others feedback and practice giving constructive\, well-argued feedback for interpreters. \nDuring the session\, you will interpret a short example scenario while recording yourself\, and then you will reflect on your recordings and repeat the scenario to improve. This will give you time to actively apply what you learn during the webinar. You will also receive temporary two-month access to Terp\, an interactive platform for practicing interpreting. You will receive instructions on how to complete practice sessions on Terp and send these practice sessions (which will include recordings of your interpretations) to colleagues to request feedback from them. These learning activities will help you unlock the power of constructive feedback and repetition. \nBy attending this webinar\, you will:\n\nIncorporate principles of deliberate practice into your interpreting training.\nEvaluate interpretations using a structured rubric.\nProvide constructive feedback tailored to interpreters.\nArticulate the strengths and areas for improvement in an interpretation with clarity and objectivity.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nDevin Gilbert is a translation/interpreting practitioner\, educator\, and researcher. He teaches Spanish translation and interpreting as an assistant professor at Utah Valley University鈥檚 Department of Languages & Cultures. His research interests include translation/interpreting pedagogy\, translation process research\, and translation/interpreting technology. He enjoys developing software for the web and is constantly trying to expand his developer skillset. In 2022\, he started Terp\, a web-based interpreting training platform that makes quality\, authentic interpreting practice more accessible and interactive.

As a PhD candidate in Organizational Psychology\, he focuses on developing strategies to foster psychologically safe environments that enhance both well-being and professional excellence. DESCRIPTION:ATA awards a grant-in-aid to a student for a literary or sci-tech translation or translation-related project. The project\, which may be derived from any facet of translation studies\, should result in a project with post-grant applicability\, such as a publication\, a conference presentation\, or teaching materials. Computerized materials are ineligible\, as are dissertations and theses. Translations must be from a foreign language INTO ENGLISH. Previously untranslated works are preferred.
